Singing in Paradiso

Have I ever told you I love singing? Well, now I do.
Singing is something that came intuitively to me. Since I was a kid, I would start singing all songs I would know. My mother would know I'd be feverish, when I would sing more than usual :)

I am singing when I am sad, when I am stressed, when I am happy.
I sing when I cycle, tired from a full day of work, back home.
I sing after zig-a-zig-ah.
I sing always and I sing everyday. I don't know much about music and I am not so good yet in reading notes. Singing till now was a habit for me.

Recently, I decided to know more about me, my voice. Is nice when one can sing tolerable or when you can imitate other singers. But is more beautiful to discover your own voice, your own signature, your own DNA. This is my voice, this is me!

Almost a year ago, I joined, for the first time in my life, a choir, as a hobby. We are singing pop songs. The best hits of the radio ;)  I must say that this is one of the best things I have ever tried.
Singing is like a sport, in that it involves toning and strengthening muscles, is developing stamina in using those muscles, as well as learning how not to fatigue or damage them. Also singing high notes boosts the endorphin secretion in your brain.
Does this sound like too much and complicated information?
Let me rephrase:
After a full day working behind my computer screen, I am singing in the choir for 2 hours. The result is wonderful. I am full of energy and I feel literally resurrected!

Singing in a choir is also educative. It boosts our skills for teamwork. The result that people listen from us, is a result of a teamwork. People with different voices, different anatomy, different singing skills, practice together, listen to one another, feel the rhythm of the music and produce something all together. And this is beautiful!

Last January, we performed in Paradiso in Amsterdam. Paradiso is a very famous music venue and cultural centre, that is located in Amsterdam. Big names of the music area perform there. Thus, you can imagine the excitement that such a performance brings!

For this performance, we gathered an ensemble of 200 people from choirs from different cities. Is cool, that we could perform all together, although we don't practice together. Isn't it?!
We were on the stage, wearing our best outfit. We were singing pop songs, that most people have, at least, heard once. People would sing with us and would applause.
Can you imagine what a great feeling that is? A performance is like your efforts and practice has paid back!

Well, I will tell you what. That was not the best part of this.

The best part was being in the audience.

We were performing in Paradiso in an event called "korendagen", which literately translates to "choir days". It was a day - or maybe more days, I am not sure about that - that different choirs, from different cities, gathered and performed, the one after the other.

You could hear all kind of songs, with English or Dutch lyrics. Different styles as well. And the people performing would be of all ages,
all skills, all types.
There was a choir, that looked like a group of outliers. And another one, only with women. There was a choir of elders and in another choir would be people struck by the hits of life.
There were all kinds of people there.

Just like a fruit bowl full with various and exotic fruits.
All the fruits are tasty, although they taste differently.
Like the fruits have something in common although different, we also have something in common.
We love music and we love singing!
People would be on the stage, proud, with their best outfit, with their most beautiful smile.
They would be up there and perform for us! Like you put your heart in something you love, similarly they would put their heart to sing for us. Forgetting all the pain and fear. They were on the stage and they would do their best for us! I applauded a lot, I sang songs with them, I laughed and I cried.

And that was beautiful. That was the most beautiful part of the day. I will never forget this chance I had. Not because I was on the stage singing in Paradiso. But because I was in the audience.

Is nice to hear good quality of music. Is nice to hear nice songs being performed well. But the biggest beauty comes from within.
